Following an influx of Chinese immigration to the United States in the 1850s, economic and cultural conflicts emerged. In an attempt to appease increasing anti-Chinese sentiment, the U.S. government passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, a compromise made at the expense of the Chinese community and American values.
